Rugby Union Betting Markets Explained

The main markets work much like the ones you know from hockey and football. The differences are in the scoring, and they matter.

MarketHow it worksWhat to look for
MoneylineWhich team wins the match.Draws happen in union (Northampton and Exeter drew 33-33 in September 2025), so check whether the market is two-way or includes the draw.
HandicapThe underdog gets a points start, usually ending in .5.The key numbers are 3 (penalty), 5 (try) and 7 (converted try). The difference between -6.5 and -7.5 settles a lot of bets.
TotalsCombined points scored by both teams, over or under the line.Check the weather first. A wet December pool game turns into a kicking match; a dry night in Wellington doesn't.
TryscorerFirst or anytime tryscorer on selected matches.Hookers score plenty of tries from driving lineout mauls and are often priced longer than the wingers.
Match specialsMarkets such as winning margin and total tries, where offered.Useful when you expect a one-sided game but don't want to lay a big handicap.

Bonus points are worth understanding before you bet a handicap. In most competitions a team earns one for scoring four tries and another for losing by seven or fewer. A side 12 points down late on will often kick a penalty to get within seven instead of chasing the game, and a favourite on three tries will keep attacking for the fourth.

Rugby Union Futures & Outrights

Outright markets on the Six Nations, the Champions Cup, the domestic leagues and the World Cup are on the Rugby Union Futures page. They usually open well before the first round and stay up until the trophy is lifted.

Early prices lean on last season's finishing positions and the off-season signings. That's where the value tends to be, because form takes a few rounds to show. Exeter finished ninth in the Premiership in 2024-25 and were in the final a year later.

Your futures bet keeps the price you took, however the odds move afterwards. Extra time and kicking competitions count towards outright and "to lift the trophy" markets.

Live In-Play Rugby Union Betting

Live rugby odds cover the moneyline, handicap and total for the full 80 minutes. A try, a successful penalty or a yellow card moves the line straight away, and a yellow means ten minutes with fourteen players. Half-time is worth a second look: a team that has dominated territory without scoring often turns it into points after the break. Every match in play is on the live betting page, and pre-match and in-play bets come from the same CAD balance.

When the Rugby Is On in Canada

Most top-level rugby is played in Europe or the southern hemisphere, so kick-offs land at odd hours here. Times are approximate and shift by an hour around the daylight-saving changes.

Rugby Union Betting FAQs

What happens to my bet if a rugby union match is a draw?

It depends on the market. In a three-way match bet the draw is its own result, so bets on either team lose. On a half-point handicap there's no draw: a level score is a margin of zero and the bet settles on that.

Can I bet on tournament winners before the season starts?

Yes. The Rugby Union Futures page has outright markets for the major competitions, usually from well before the first round.

Bet responsibly. Sports betting should be entertainment, so only stake what you can afford to lose. If you need help or want to take a break, see Responsible Gaming.
