NBA Betting in Canada: Odds, Lines & Spreads

From late October to mid-April there's NBA basketball action almost every night of the week, and the playoffs run into June. Every game goes up on the board above with a spread, a moneyline and a total. Player props and live lines follow closer to tip-off. Our basketball odds are shown in American format and everything settles in Canadian dollars.

An 82-game season is long, and nobody plays all of it at full strength. Stars sit out back-to-backs, teams drag themselves through five-game road trips, and the injury report can change an hour before the game. That's why the line you see at breakfast often isn't the one you bet at 7 p.m. The rest of this page covers how to read NBA lines here at Ozoon, what makes them move, and a few habits worth picking up if you bet the league regularly.

How To Read NBA Lines

Here's how a typical NBA game looks on the board. The numbers are made up for the example.

TeamSpreadMoneylineTotal
Chicago Bulls+3.5 (-110)+140Over 228.5 (-110)
Toronto Raptors-3.5 (-110)-165Under 228.5 (-110)

Point Spread

Toronto is giving 3.5 points here. Back the Raptors at -3.5 and you need them to win by four or more. Take the Bulls at +3.5 and you win if Chicago wins the game or loses by three or fewer. The -110 in brackets is the cost: $110 to win $100.

You'll hear people talk about a team's record against the spread, or ATS. It isn't the same as their win-loss record. A good team the market loves can win 50 games and still lose money for anyone backing them every night, because the spreads they're asked to cover keep getting bigger. An ATS record tells you how a team has been priced, and that's often more useful than knowing how good it is.

NBA spreads also move more than in most sports. If a star gets ruled out late, the point spread today can shift four or five points in minutes. Check it again before you bet.

Moneyline

The NBA moneyline is the easy one: pick who wins. At -165 you're risking $165 to make $100 on the Raptors. At +140, a $100 bet on Chicago pays $140 profit if they pull off the upset. Once a favourite gets to around -400, you're putting up a lot to win a little, and plenty of bettors look at the spread instead.

Over/Under

The over/under is the two teams' combined score. Over 228.5 needs 229 points or more. Overtime counts, so a tie after four quarters is a nice bonus if you're on the over. Pace is the thing to watch. Two fast teams coming off a day's rest will carry a much higher total than two slow, defensive teams playing their second game in two nights.

NBA Opening Lines & Line Movement

The opening line is the first number posted for a game, and it rarely stays put. Most of the movement comes from news, such as injury updates, rest decisions and confirmed starting line-ups. The rest comes from betting volume, and the public tends to back favourites, overs and the league's most popular teams.

You'll see betting consensus numbers quoted a lot, showing what share of bets is on each side. They're worth a look, but they aren't a pick. The games to pay attention to are the ones where the line goes the other way. Say 70% of tickets are on the Lakers and their spread still drops from -5.5 to -4.5. Somebody betting bigger is on the other side. That's reverse line movement.

There's a practical use for all this. If you like a team you expect the public to pile onto, get your bet in early. If you like an underdog nobody wants, it often pays to wait for a better number.

NBA Betting Markets at Ozoon

Full-game lines are only the start. You'll also find:

  • Player props: NBA player prop bets on points, rebounds, assists, threes, steals, blocks and combinations of those. You can put your own together in the Prop Builder. If the player doesn't take the court, the bet is voided and you get your stake back.
  • Same game parlays: combine a side, a total and a few props from one game into a single bet.
  • Futures and season-long markets: NBA Futures, NBA Awards, regular season win totals and, once April comes round, NBA Series Prices for every playoff round.

Futures prices move all season as injuries, trades and form change things. The team at the top of the board in October isn't always the one holding the trophy in June, so a lot of bettors build their futures positions over the season instead of making one bet and waiting.

Live NBA Odds and In-Play Betting

Basketball is made for live betting. Each team gets around 100 possessions a game, ten-point runs happen in a couple of minutes, and you can usually spot foul trouble or a cold shooting night well before it shows up in the score. Live NBA odds on the moneyline, spread and total update throughout the game, along with quarter winner and next team to score.

Markets lock for a moment during replay reviews and free throws, then come back at a new price. Overtime counts for live bets unless the market says otherwise. You'll find every game in progress on the live betting page.

NBA Betting Tips

Here's how people who bet the NBA seriously go about picking their best bets. None of it is complicated, but most people skip at least one step.

  1. Check the injury report before you look at the odds. Most NBA line movement is news, so know who's out, questionable or on a minutes limit before you decide a price looks good.
  2. Look at the schedule. Back-to-backs and long road trips wear teams down, older rosters especially. The second night of a back-to-back is where tired legs show up in spreads and totals.
  3. Bet props on minutes, not names. A star's points line doesn't mean much if the game could turn into a blowout and he sits the fourth quarter.
  4. Compare the opening line with what's posted now. If you're late to a big move, the value has probably gone.
  5. Watch ATS and totals records, not just the standings. They show where the market keeps getting a team wrong.
  6. Keep your stakes flat. Betting the same amount each time stops one bad night from turning into a bad week.

Betting the NBA from Canada

Canada only has one team in the league, but Canadian fans don't stop at the Raptors. Canadian players are now some of the biggest names in the NBA, Hamilton's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander first among them, so plenty of people here follow teams nowhere near Scotiabank Arena. Raptors games, the big national-TV matchups and anything involving a Canadian star tend to be the busiest nights.

NBA Betting FAQs

Does overtime count in NBA betting?

Yes, for full-game spreads, moneylines, totals and player props, unless the market says otherwise. First-half and quarter bets are settled on that period only.

What does betting against the spread mean?

It means betting on a team to cover the spread rather than just win. Take a team at +6.5 and you win if they win the game or lose by six or fewer.

Why do NBA lines move so much?

One player matters more in basketball than in almost any other team sport. If a star is ruled out an hour before tip-off, the spread can move several points. Rest days on back-to-backs add to the swings.

What happens to my player prop if the player doesn't play?

The bet is voided and you get your stake back.

Can I bet on the NBA in Canadian dollars?

Yes. Ozoon accounts are held in CAD, and NBA bets are placed and paid out in CAD.
